Founded in 1896 (Meiji 29),
Aurora is a long-established umbrella manufacturer that emerged during the
era when Western culture began taking root in Japan.
For over 130 years, we have honed our planning expertise and craftsmanship
through products designed to suit Japan’s unique climate and environment.
While preserving our traditions, we continually embrace new materials and
designs, delivering reliability and beauty to customers around the world.
The history of Aurora
1896
Wakabayashi Shoten was founded by Kichinosuke WAKABAYASHI in Taito, Tokyo, where he began a wholesale business specializing in Western umbrellas.
1949
Started handling scarves and stoles.
1955
President Kozo WAKABAYASHI, a prominent figure in the umbrella industry, conducted the first post-war inspection tour of Europe and America as an umbrella industry professional.
1988
Launched Kenzo's flower-patterned hand-held Western-style umbrella.
1993
Changed the company name to AURORA Corporation.
2012
Launched umbrellas using Toray's "Summer Shield" fabric, in collaboration with Toray Industries, Inc. . These umbrellas, treated for UV protection, light blocking, and heat insulation, set a new standard in the industry.
1920
Started transactions with department stores.
1939
Launched the first domestically produced folding umbrella.
This gentlemen's umbrella, developed by Makabe Shoten, featured a wooden shaft that folded in two along with the handle and was covered with pure silk.
1952
After three years of research in collaboration with Toyo Rayon (current name: Toray Industries, Inc. ), we developed the first domestic nylon umbrella, garnering significant attention in the industry.
1971
We became the first in the domestic industry to sign a licensing agreement with Pierre Cardin for umbrellas and with Pierre Balmain for scarves, establishing technical partnerships with both.
1972
Launched new Pierre Cardin umbrellas, bringing a fresh breeze to the umbrella industry.
1994
Started handling hats.
1998
Started handling Borsalino.
2007
Inherited the men's business from AuBEX Corporation and commenced operations.
Established Borsalino Japan Inc.
2016
In commemoration of our 120th anniversary, we registered the AURORA HOUSE CHECK and started selling umbrellas, stoles, scarves, and hats.

At Aurora’s Niigata factory, skilled artisans create umbrellas
